African Pride is the most flavourful and satisfying tea in Tanzania. It is also the most popular. Those who have been drinking it for years remain loyal to it, but its package is not powerful enough to attract new buyers. A new tea called Chai Bora is accompanied by an attractive package and plenty of advertising. The tea itself is not that tasty, but it gets more buyers. The package has an Arabic feel to it with the use of type in that it is curvy. The border at the top and bottom, though they are of African wildlife, have the intricate feel that is typical of Arabic designs. The dark purplish blue colour reminds me of the walls in the Stone town of Zanzibar, and the black robes and charcoal eyeliner worn by the Arab women. Tanzania has a lot of Arab influence since Arab traders moved there as they found promise in its deep water harbour. I want this tea to be African. African art usually consists of bold dynamic colours such as red, orange, yellow and green, and features geometric shapes and fairly simple compositions. I have approached the design and colours for the new package with this information in mind. Through different patterns and colour studies I want to achieve a package that has an African feel and that does justice to the contents within.
